FIFA World Rankings May 2013 (released 9 May)

In the May World Fifa Rankings of 2013, Euro 2012 and 2010 World Cup winners Spain remain at the top of the rankings for yet another month, with the top 13 teams unchanged. So, below Spain are Germany, Argentina, then Croatia, Portugal, Colombia, England, Italy, Netherlands and Ecuador.

Copa America winners Uruguay are 17th. Brazil stay in 19th position - their lowest ever spot in the rankings. Belgium are up to 15th position.

Ivory Coast are the top African team in 12th.

Asian Cup winners Japan are in 30th place, a drop of one place after defeat to Jordan in a World Cup qualifier.

South Korea are in 42nd position. Both Japan and South Korea are on course to qualify for World Cup 2014 in Brazil and are among the top ranked teams in Asia together with Australia, who are 47th.

The USA are in 29th place, down one place from last month. Scotland are in 79th position. The Republic of Ireland are in 39th place, Wales are in 49th, Northern Ireland are 119th.

How the FIFA World Rankings are calculated

Match Result: - Win-Draw-Defeat = 3 points - 1 points - 0 points
Importance of match - 1 (friendly match) to 4 (FIFA World Cup™)
Strength of opponent - Position in world ranking (no. 1 = 2.00, no. 30 = 1.70, no. 118 = 0.82 etc.) Formula: [200 minus Position] / 100
Regional strength - Based on results in last three FIFA World Cups (wins per confederation per match)
Period - Since the change to the FIFA World Ranking procedure which came into effect in August 2006 the rankings will no longer take into account the last eight years of results only the last four years of results.
Last four years, gradual decline in importance of results: 100%- 50% - 30% - 20%
Number of matches considered per year - Average points gained from all matches in last 12 months (minimum: 5 matches)
