Once again the time has come around again for the John Smith's Grand National. The wonderful and world famous race that attracts thousands of punters and horse racing fans worldwide, attended by top trainers, jockeys, and many celebrities is here again.
The National is an endurance race for both jockey and horse, both having to overcome a full 30 fences to get home, not to mention avoiding the fallers, unseated riders, horse brought down by other fallers.
Anything can happen in the Grand National: the race could be won by any of the 40 horses. As many people in racing would know, the winner of last years Grand National 'Don't Push It' under TA P McCoy, one of the greatest jockeys ever to have mounted a horse. McCoy has many achievements; he has won the championship 15 times running, being the first ever jockey to ride 3,000 winners; McCoy has won all of jump racing's greatest events: The Cheltenham Gold Cup, The Champion Chase, The King George, and last year, finally after 15 attempts, The Grand National.
Below are the four horses that I believe you should look out for:
The midnight club
The midnight club, trained by the champion hurdle winner Willie Mullins will be ridden by champion jockey Ruby Walsh. Ruby Walsh rode both winners in the first two races of the national week on Thursday, startig the week off on a high for himself. The Midnight club top class chaser winning last time out at Fairyhouse under Paul Townend, where he ran a fantastic race. His last four times out have been satisfactory without being spectacular, coming a second, third, third and a first, respectively, under E Mullins and Paul Townend. Currently the favourite at 9-1 at bet 365, he stands a very good chance with a champion jockey aboard.
Big fella thanks
Big Fella Thanks, trained by top trainer Ferdy Murphy will be ridden by stable jockey Graham Lee. The horse finished fourth in the Grand National last year under Barry Geraghty, also finishing fourth last time out at Newbury under Graham Lee. He hasn't been as successful as The Midnight Club, finishina fourth at Ascot under Dominic Elsworth, falling at Newbury with Graham Lee aboard, although he finished a good one length behind Hey Big Spender to give him a well earned second.Big Fella Thanks is currently priced at 16/1 by bet 365. He is no stranger to the Grand National. the Big fella certainly has a shout!
Don't push it
Don't Push It, as discerning punters will know is the John Jo O'Neil trained horse owned by John P McManus. The horse won the Grand National last year under the champion jockey Tony McCoy. This was Mccoy's fifteenth attempt to win the Grand Nationa. Finally for McCoy, Don't Push It delivered the goods for John Jo O'Neil and himself. Although last time out at Cheltenham he finished 10th under Mccoy and his previous 3 runs before were no better coming a 7th at Newbury 12th at Cheltenham and he was pulled up at Cheltenham in December last year. But this year he is back for more and once again McCoy is aboard last year's champion hoping that lightening will strike twice. Currently he is 10/1 at Bet 365 and this horse proved himself to us last year pushing a lot of money back to many lucky punters. So maybe you could push a fiver on him this year?
Backstage
Backstage trained by Gordon Elliott with P Carberry aboard will hope to take his opportunity to impress and is currently 12/1 at bet 365. The French horse has won his last two runs at The Pigeons Racecourse under J J Codd and also Kirkistown. The horse unseated D J Condon in the national last year. Although he did finish 10th at Galway racecourse under D J Condon and 7th at Bellewstown. This will be his third trip over these fences. Fighting chance.
All of the above horses have more than a fighting chance, it is the national after all and anything can happen, but in my humble opinion, at midnight on Saturday, a plethora of punters will be celebrating the victory of The midnight club. GET ON!!!
Whichever horse you're backing, I hope you'll enjoy the greatest day of the jump-racing year. Cheers!
