Lviv New Stadium

Euro 2012

2012 European Championships Stadiums: Lviv New Stadium (Lviv)

Construction of Lviv's new €85 million stadium (Arena Lviv) began in November 2008, with the 33,500 arena on course to open in July 2011. The stadium's architects are Vienna-based Albert Wimmer, who were responsible for Klagenfurt Stadium in Austria used in the 2008 European Championships.

The stadium's naming rights are to be sold prior to Euro 2012 to help the local regional council (who invested 25% of the €85 million) and private investors accrue some of the construction costs. The new venue's price tag has risen throughout its build, with fears its final cost could more than double.

The two-tier bowl will become Lviv's third stadium, in addition to the Ukraina Stadium (home to FC Karpaty Lviv) and the SKA Stadium (home to FC Karpaty-2) which are both located in central Lviv. The New Stadium is to the far south of Lviv, close to the city's border and next to the M06 motorway, which serves Wroclaw, Kiev and Kharkiv.

Lviv will host three group games during Euro 2012 and in keeping with all other tournament venues, the city will have its own 'fan park' in the city centre. Lviv has a modest football history, compared to the likes of Donetsk and Kiev. Euro 2012 will give the city a chance to put itself on the sporting map for decades to come.
