Set on the slopes of Kiev's Cherepanov Hill, the Olimpic National Sports Complex Stadium, also known as the Olympic Stadium, Republican Stadium or Central Stadium, is steeped in history.
Having originally opened in August 1923, the Olympic Stadium has hosted major events over the years including the Ukrainian Cup Final and the 1980 Summer Olympics. The stadium has also served as the home ground for the old Soviet Union and Ukraine national football teams, as well as club sides Zheldor Kiev and Dynamo Kiev.
Since its initial opening, the Olympic Stadium in Kiev has undergone major renovations in 1941, 1966, 1978 and 1999. Ahead of Euro 2012, the venue will once again be subject to major redevelopment. A new West Stand, with media and corporate hospitality facilities across two tiers, will be constructed. The whole lower tier of the arena will be rebuilt and a new roof installed.
Renovation, completed in 2011, will see seating capacity at the Olympic Stadium rise to 69,004, making it the largest sporting venue in the Ukraine. It will be here in Ukraine's capital Kiev on 1st July 2012 that the final of Euro 2012 will be held. The ground will also hold three group stage matches, two quarter-finals and a semi-final.
