Premiership Betting

A Soccerphile Guide to Betting by Chris Clegg: Putting your money where your mouth is.

Whether you like to remain monogamous, sticking to one single woman...I mean bet; or whether you prefer multiples - a ménage a trois, perhaps, or even a five or six-wayer? Here's your definitive betting guide that will aim to explain that complicated wager-vocabulary.

The Acca

'The Acca': also known as 'the accumulator': An accumulator 'does exactly what it says on the tin', in that it accumulates your individual bets together to produce larger odds. However, if one of your selections lets you down, you lose! An example of this on Saturday might be a four way accumulator (or acca) comprising of Bolton to beat Wolves at odds of 11/10; Norwich to beat Fulham at 6/4; Arsenal to beat QPR at 1/4 and Manchester United to beat Blackburn at 1/8. An accumulator can be four selections, five, six...in fact as many as you feel you can predict. However, you must remember that if one of your selections does not win, you lose... Alas, if all of your predictions are correct, you could end up winning a fortune.

Trebles for Dough

If you read my predictions regularly you'll know that I usually predict 'trebles' which – again -are pretty self-explanatory: three predictions that must all happen to be successful . Three draws will always guarantees good odds and are rather likely in the competitive Premier league. Typical draw odds are 12/5. If you place your £10 on three draws, all of which are around 12/5 then you will win over £350 if all three selections draw (odds of over 35/1). Your £10 is bet on the first match draw odds of 12/5. Your £10 wins £24 on the first match plus your £10 back. Therefore, £34 goes on to your next selection, which is 12/5. This selection wins and you collect £115.60 - £81 plus your £34 back. The £115.60 then goes on your final selection, which is 12/5. Your three selections are successful and you collect £393.04 (just under £278 plus your £115.60 stake). An example of a treble that might just win you a fortune for this coming weekend is three draws at Liverpool 3/1 (versus Newcastle), Sunderland 17/5 (against Man City) and Swansea 11/4 (versus Spurs). The treble is over 60/1 therefore a tenner wins sixty-times as much: £600.

Doubles for Show

A double keeps it very simple: you make two predictions and if they both come true, you win . If one lets you down, you lose! The predictions I usually make are on individual matches and either on one team to win or the draw. However, if you want the odds you receive to be much better, why not try two correct scores? An example of such a double for the New Year's Eve fixtures would be Chelsea to beat Aston Villa 2-1 (at odds of 11/2) and Arsenal to beat QPR 2-0 (at odds of 8/1). This double is harder to predict than two wins BUT will reap more return for your tenner. Your £10 goes on Chelsea to win 2-1 at 11/2 which wins £55 plus your £10 back. Your £65 won on Chelsea then goes on to Arsenal to win 2-0 at 8/1. 8 multiplied by £65 is £520 plus your £65 stake is £585...pretty good, eh?

Single anyone?

A single is one bet...if your prediction comes true, you win!

Like many men, I'm single but much prefer doubles, or trebles...or foursomes! Women, however, seem to avoid taking a punt on me... I'm a bit of a gamble, you see... Some singles are not worth touching with a barge pole; others, however, are much more appealing. On Saturday, Manchester United are hideously priced at 1/8 as they are fully expected to beat Blackburn; alas, is it worth placing your £10 on them just to win £1.25 plus your tenner back? I would rather take more of a risk and risk losing the stake. A £10 bet on United to win 3-1 is priced at 10/1 which means you would receive £100 back if it happens plus your tenner back...happy days!

The Safety Net

Some bookies are offering a safety net accumulator which allows one of your selections to let you down . Therefore, if you have an accumulator (i.e. a five-wayer at the weekend on Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs and one of them loses you will still win something...it wouldn't be a great deal, though - I'm more of an 'all or nothing' man!)

Lucky 15

A Lucky fifteen is fifteen bets on four selections and even if only one of them wins, you will still win something ...it might not even be anywhere near what you put on, though. However, the more winners from your selections, the more you will receive. The bet includes 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 four-way accumulator. Therefore, if one of the selections happens, only one of your bets triumphs. However, if two of your selections happen, three of your bets are realised (two singles and one double); if three are correct, six of your bets are realised: three singles, two doubles and a treble). Obviously, if all four of your selections happen, all 15 of your bets are in and you are laughing! Remember, though, your are placing fifteen different bets so if each bet is a pound, it's going to cost you £15.

A good way to try your hand at a lucky fifteen is at the start of the season on four teams to win their respective leagues. If one win, Manchester City perhaps? You'll get something back... if all four win: Manchester City, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Crawley then you will be laughing throughout the summer...and probably well into next season with a lot of money in your pockets.
