German media group Kirch, the holders of the World Cup television rights,
and Italian state TV Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) have come to a settlement
for RAI to broadcast the 2002 World Cup and the best twenty-five matches
of the 2006 World Cup in a deal worth US$138m.
The arrangement also includes an option clause for RAI to purchase all the 2006 games for an extra US$78m.
Kirch media paid US$832m for the broadcast rights to the 2002 & 2006 World Cups.
