Guus Hiddink - Korea Move

Photograph of Hiddink worriedGuus Hiddink, the former Dutch national team coach, took over the reins of the South Korean national team on January 1 2001. His multi-million dollar contract runs until the end of the World Cup in June 2002 and reportedly includes a signing payout and an incentive bonus should South Korea make it to the last 16. As the South Koreans, like their co-hosts Japan have yet to win a match at a World Cup, Guus Hiddink faces a difficult task. Hiddink will be aided by a team of two fellow Dutchmen: his assistant coach Pim Verbeek and technical co-ordinator Jan Roelfs.

Hiddink, 54, has an impressive record as a coach, guiding Holland to the semi-finals in the 98 World Cup and winning the European Cup twice with PSV Eindhoven in 1988 and Real Madrid in 1998. The Korean FA were looking to hire a big-name coach to succeed Huh Jung Moo following disappointing displays in the 2000 Asian Cup in Lebanon, won by their footballing rivals and co-hosts, Japan, managed by French coach Philippe Troussier. Is total football on its way to South Korea?
