Cosmic Football - Mick McCarthy
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy is the subject of this month's Cosmic Football astrological profile.
There are a lot of similarities between Mick McCarthy and the other newly promoted club managers I've examined over the summer. We have a great amount of Saturn hits in McCarthy's chart throughout this season, meaning the Yorkshire man and Wolves are in for a tough ride in the Premiership - not that they didn't know that already.
A personality trait that McCarthy shares with Owen Coyle of Burnley and Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is stubbornness. Given the amount of Earth signs in his chart, I think you'll struggle to find a more stubborn manager in the Premier League actually. It surprises me that McCarthy only has one fire sign in his chart. With the passion and stress that is so evident from his behaviour on the touchline on match day, you'd think his chart would be full of fire.
With lots of planets in Aquarius, not only would McCarthy appear to be a stubborn man, he's also someone adamant that he's going to do things his own way. Former Irish skipper Roy Keane has very similar planetary arrangements in his chart, so it's no surprise to me that the two famously came to loggerheads ahead of the 2002 World Cup.
McCarthy has a lot of Pluto present in his chart which indicates change and challenge. The next two years will be highly significant in his life, not only from a professional point of view but a personal one too. He has Pluto conjunct Saturn throughout the rest of 2009, indicating a stressful time ahead from a work point of view. More significantly, he has Pluto sextile Venus in 2010, Venus of course being the planet of relationships.
I think this will very much to be to with McCarthy's private life. Perhaps it means a new relationship, or maybe the renaissance of a current one. Whatever it is, I get the feeling football will be taking a back seat over the next twelve months. Wolves could suffer as a result, though he strikes me as being ultra-professional and hopefully it won't affect the West Midlanders adversely.
I have a strong feeling the manager is keen to start doing things he's never been able to do before because of the schedule associated with his job. Pluto sextile Neptune means McCarthy will become less motivated by money and more interested in things outside his job. He's definitely thinking more and more about his path in life and his home life in particularly.
The presence of Neptune in McCarthy's chart means he should be wary of someone trying to pull the wool over his eyes. He could be quite vulnerable to deception in the next twelve months due to this Neptune placement. He's also got to be resilient in defeat, I get the feeling he is someone that can take loses very personally.
Another really overwhelming feeling I get from McCarthy's chart is that this is a man who could be falling out of love with football. Placements in his chart such as Saturn quintile the Sun and Saturn quintile the Moon represent new beginnings and viewing current occupations in a different light. As I've eluded to, McCarthy always wants to be his own man and he could be brave enough to walk away from the game if he really wanted to.
I can see conflicts occurring in the Wolves changing room while Neptune passes through McCarthy's chart. It's a placement that means he's prone to losing his temper and he really must do his best not to damage his relationship with certain players.
An overall theme of McCarthy's chart is success and experience and despite the handicaps that could affect his season, I still think he's good manager for Wolves to have at the helm. It's going to be tough, but along with Birmingham, I do see Wolves having the all important luck factor on their side from an astrological prospective. The major question is, will McCarthy want to stick around if the going gets tough this season? It's not beyond the realms of possibility him walking out of Wolves sometime in the next 24 months when you look at the chart.
