Top Gun
I'm going to start on Sunday this week as it's the
clash of the (not-so-much) titans at Anfield as the Reds take on
the (not-so) Top-Gunners. Well, I say they're 'not-so-top
gunners' but they do have Tom Cruise himself playing for them
now. Having said that, he was about as influential in midweek against
Olympiakos as Goose was to Maverick in the film. If you don't
know what happened in Top Gun, sadly the Goose is no longer with
us. "I'll hit the brakes he'll fly right by",
Mav (Cruise) insisted in the film. Unfortunately for Arsenal and
Liverpool, they've hit the brakes and Chelsea/Manchester United
have disappeared northwards. Like the Iceman in the film, they're
out of reach - cruise control, one might say" Oh yes
I'm supposed to predict who will win Sunday's match"erm
Liverpool, just. 11/10's "very nice price", thank
you, please. 2/1 Arsenal, also 'very nice'; the draw?
21/10 - "I liiiiike!" the teams? "Not-so-much".
From footy to films"Cruise to Borat and back again. Only on
Soccerphile!
Saturday...
I said to the Gym instructor "Can you teach me to do the
splits?" He said "How flexible are you?" I said "I
can't make Saturdays."
Will Stoke take a Beattie-ng?
Fresh from his own 'beating' at the hands, or head, of his boss,
JB is expected to be included for Saturday's encounter with the
Wiganers. Both sides (that's Stoke and Wigan, not Pulis and Beattie
- only Beattie was bruised in that match) had bruising encounters
last week, at the heads, or feet, of Arsenal and Birmingham, respectively,
and they'll both be hoping to bounce back against each other on
Saturday. Stoke are excellent value at 11/10; Wigan are 2/1 and
it's 11/5 the draw - which is the same price as is the re-match
between the 'badman-ager' and his fighting apprentice to take place
pitch side on Saturday. Get on it.
Last Christmas
The exact same prices are on the table for the encounter between
Birmingham (11/10) and West Ham (2/1). I can't see past Birmingham
- there are too many high buildings there. Wham are way too
inconsistent. 'Last Christmas' they were better placed
and finished the season 9th. "I'm your man!" claims
Zola. I'm not too sure about that. They'll be lucky
to clamber up towards mid-table mediocrity this year. As for the
Brum, they seem to be on the way up. A blues victory here, I feel,
and quite possibly a comfortable one.
Lancashire derby
Now, I'm sure you discerning punters are aware that last
week I correctly predicted that Manchester City would break their
drawing sequence with a delightful double over Arsenal (Pointless
cup) and Chelsea (lucrative league). They are 4/5 to continue their
winning ways at Bolton and no wanderers are backing their team at
11/4. 23/10 the draw. City to win. And some.
More Lancastrians
Burnley meet Fulham at Turf Moor and Coyle's boys might
just spring into action this week. 6/4 is a generous price: Burnley
can be dangerous at home - as indeed can Fulham - alas
they're away this week so another loss then. 6/4's a
joke about Fulham. It's 21/10 the draw.
Never back the Toffees at the Bridge
As much as I like the taste of toffee, it tastes terrible when
it's only 9/1 at Stamford Bridge. The way the Merseysiders
are playing at the moment they should be 99-1 and then I'd
struggle to justify backing them. Chelsea are bigger certainties
than they were against Apoel in midweek. Oh yes, I forgot, they
didn't win that one. They will win on Saturday. Trust me.
2/9 is great value - £2 back for a £9 stake. It's
a rare occasion I'll advocate such a long odds-on bet but
it really is like printing money. Everton are woeful. Chelsea are
awesome. Rout - no doubt. At least three or four zip to the
blues of Laaaaandon.
Sports Personality
At Old Trafford, Villa are visiting and will probably be hoping
United will still be without some of their key players. Mind you,
with half a squad missing they still fried the wolfburgers to a
frazzle in Germany with Michael Owen the head chef in the kitchen.
Owen wants an England call-up; as does Villa's Abangedlewhore. I'm
not sure which one I would prefer but I think United will be victorious
on Saturday and soon-to-be-crowned sports personality of the year,
Ryan Giggs will be instrumental on his return from his well earned
rest. Get on United at 1/2. Villa are 6/1 and it's 3/1 the draw.
The odds on Giggs to score AND win BBC's coveted award? I'm not
sure but it's tempting, isn't it?
Gone fishing?
As one would expect, or as they say in Hull, "Az tha'd expect."
It's a different betting market as Brown's boys entertain the Rovers
of Blackburn. It will be close up in East Yorkshire, despite the
weathermen insisting it will be freezing. 9/5 against a Hull victory;
6/4 Blackburn and 23/10 the draw. That's close, Michael Fish, I
don't care what you think. There are lots of fish in Hull and Jimmy
Bullard's got plenty of time to catch some; I think I'll join him
as it will be much more entertaining than this match. Bore draw?
Two to go
At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland host Pompey and down at the
lane in London, Spurs entertain Wolves. Two home wins to finish,
methinks. The black cats are 4/5 (Pompey 7/2; 5/2 draw); Spurs are
1/4 which isn't good value; 11/1 Wolves and 9/2 the draw - niiiiice
priiiiice.
Weekend Wager
Hull/Blackburn draw (23/10), Sunderland to beat Pompey (4/5),
Burnley to beat Fulham (6/4) and Chelsea to nail Everton (2/9).
Over £130 for your tenner. Thank you, please.
A Couple of Tempters
Giggsy is 11/4 to score on Saturday and he's about the same price
(second favourite) to win on Sunday night. That's about an 8/1 double.
You could make it more lucrative and have him to score first @ 8/1
and double it up with the 11/4 to win Sports Personality - well
over 20/1 - that's more like it!
