Betting - The Premiership Weekend Wager
Sporting predictions by Chris Clegg
Your hands should be 'Burn'ing to back the Clarets to freeze 'Sun'derland's
September heat this Saturday.
As another Barclays premiership weekend approaches, punters will
be flocking to land their feathery fivers on hotly priced Burnley
(8/5) to sink Sunderland on the penultimate Saturday in what has
been a shocking September of typically unpredictable premiership
encounters.
Burnley were 10-1 when they toppled the champions at Turf Moor
just under a month ago and the Clarets' faithful piled in for a
field day. It was certainly a 'Turf (accountant) Moorning' after
the Wednesday Night before for the many United fans who thought
their team were midweek dead certainties - back in August. I'm sure
the Clarets' faithful will get on their beloved again on Saturday.
Sunderland, of course, are travelling westwards on the back of
a 4-1 drubbing of lowly Hull at the Stadium of Light last Saturday;
but bouncy Burnley are a different prospect, especially at their
holy grail - 'Moor' victories to come on their
Turf this season, beginning this Saturday, at the expense of the
black cats, who are abysmally priced (typically) at 7/5 favourites
for the match - inexplicable.
Another banker for the discerning punter this Saturday is at Villa
Park where the brummies (Birmingham residents) of Aston face Portsmouth,
who are in desperate trouble, even at this early stage of the season,
with only David (calamity) James between the sticks capable of sparing
their blushes. Unfortunately for James, Villa's resurgent team will
close the mouths of travelling Pompey-ites as they fill their boots
at the expense of the South Coast misfits. The Villa: a tasty 4/11;
Pompey: 7/1 - I wouldn't get on them if they were twice the price.
Steer clear of Hull and Birmingham, as most sensible Brits tend
to. No, sorry, Birmingham is actually OK. I wouldn't attempt
to predict a result here...Well actually, Hull will edge it but
I wouldn't put your money on it, never mind my own, so I don't
advise you to either...unless you're from Hull, in which case
- go for it, put your mother's giro on it - you've
nothing to lose.
At the Emirates it's safe to say that the Wenger boys will
be coming up trumps against the Wiganers, whose fans still persist
in chanting "who to be, who to be a, who to be a Wiganaaaaaaa".
They sound in great distress, which is how they will feel after
a painful mauling at the hands of Van Persie et al - bump
up your accumulators with Arsenal at 1/5 this week.
The other two Saturday games this weekend see Liverpool travelling
to the capital to play the Hammers and Stoke making their way up
the M6 to Bolton. I fear for West Ham's defence as Gerrard,
Benayoun and Torres are starting to do their thing on the pitch
for the Reds. Liverpool are not a good price at 8/15, though if
I had a gun to my head I'd choose them over the Hammers.
Harder to predict is Megson's men against hard-to-beat Stoke.
Never should Bolton be priced as even money favourites; and against
Pulis' proud team I feel they'll struggle to wrap up three points
- a draw is on the cards here.
Sunday's fixtures see an intriguing match at Molineux as
the Wolves try to thwart Fulham and McCarthy's men are terribly
priced at 5/4 favourites for the match and with "Nanananananananananana
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Ebanks-Blake, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake" (genius
football song) still sidelined, the Wolves will struggle to kill
off their resolute rivals. Roy Hodgson has transformed Fulham into
a top-half of the table team and they may just come away with the
three points come Sunday. My money's on a share of the points,
though.
Blackburn are handily priced at 10/3 to win at struggling Everton
- more misery for Moyes, methinks...
And the two table-toppers on Sunday are at the Bridge and Old
Trafford. Chelsea entertain Harry's Spurs and it's the Manchester
derby up in the North West. I could sit on the fence and predict
two draws, a double bet there would be at least 10-1 at all bookies.
However, I believe City's bubble will burst at the hands, or feet,
of their fiercest rivals, although United are embarrassingly priced
at 4/7 - not worth a look; City are a tasty 4/1 and if you're a
city lover you'll be lapping that up. Similar story at the Bridge
with Chelsea at 4/9 and Spurs spectacularly priced at 11/2. I think
Chelsea will win...so I'm getting on Spurs because I'm a punter
and punters never go with their head - the prices are just too good!
Wager of the weekend
Burnley to beat Sunderland at 8/5; Bolton and Stoke to draw at
11/5; Villa to beat Portsmouth at 4/11 and Arsenal to beat Blackburn
at 1/5 pays just under 13/1 at William Hill so a cool £126
return for your tenner.
Just for fun on Sunday
A three draw treble on Sunday (United-City; Chelsea-Spurs and
Wolves-Fulham) pays just under 40/1 at all bookies, that's
almost £400 back for your tenner. Brilliant.
