World Club Cup: Toyota Cup

The World Club Cup also known as the Intercontinental Cup and Toyota Cup (after the Japanese car company who now sponsor the event) is the annual championship game between the club champions of Europe and South America.

The fixture began over two legs (home and away) in 1960 with Real Madrid first lifting the trophy. The competition ran into problems in the 1970s when European Champions Ajax (1971 & 1973), Bayern Munich (1974) and Liverpool (1977) withdrew. In 1980 the match was switched to Tokyo as a one-off encounter. The final is now held at Yokohama International Stadium, the 2002 World Cup final venue.

The last game was played in 2004 and the championship will be replaced by a World Club Championship also held in Japan from 2005.
