Portugal & The Portuguese Language

Learning a few simple Portuguese words and phrases will certainly enhance your visit to Portugal and should go a long way in winning over your Portuguese hosts.

Portuguese can claim to be a global language and is spoken in Portugal, Brazil and several African countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe as well as East Timor in South East Asia. There are estimated to be over 270 million speakers of Portuguese around the world with the greatest number to be found in Brazil in South America.

Portuguese owes its global spread as a language to the exploration and colonialism of the Portuguese nation, the so-called "Age of Exploration" beginning in the 15th century.

Portuguese is a Latin language in origin and has simularities to both Spanish and Italian.

See our Language Book section for a selection of travel phrasebooks and books on learning Portuguese.
