Republic of Ireland 1-2 Switzerland
Russia 4-1 Albania
Pressure mounts on Ireland coach Mick McCarthy as they lost at home in a competitive match for the first time under his leadership. An improving Switzerland went ahead through Hakan Yakin but a Ludovic Magnin own goal looked likely to give the Irish a point. Fabio Celestini's late winner had the home crowd chanting for the return of Roy Keane.
A resurgent Russia easily disposed of Albania. Alexander Kerzhakov put the Russians ahead before Klodian Duro briefly levelled things for the visitors. Two goals from Sergei Semak and a Victor Onopko header sealed the home win.

Russia came back from two goals down to force a draw with Switzerland in Basel. Striker Alexander Frei put the Swiss two up after only 16 minutes with both Russia's goals from defender Sergei Ignashevich - the first a header and the equalizer a disputed second-half penalty.
