Pressure mounts on Ireland coach Mick McCarthy as they lost
at home in a competitive match for the first time under his leadership.
An improving Switzerland went ahead through Hakan Yakin but
a Ludovic Magnin own goal looked likely to give the Irish a point.
Fabio Celestini's late winner had the home crowd chanting for the
return of Roy Keane.
A resurgent Russia easily disposed of Albania. Alexander
Kerzhakov put the Russians ahead before Klodian Duro briefly levelled
things for the visitors. Two goals from Sergei Semak and a Victor
Onopko header sealed the home win.

Goals from Damian Duff and Gary Doherty either side of a Levan Kobiashvili
free-kick lifted Ireland's qualification hopes in a game marred
by Georgian fans hurling missiles on the pitch.
Joy for Albania's German coach Hans-Peter Briegel as the home team
scored twice in the closing stages to beat Russia. Striker Altin
Raklli opened the scoring for Albania after 20 minutes only for
substitute Andrei Karayka to equalize for the Russians. However,
Lala and Brescia striker Tare won the game for Albania.

Both Ireland and Switzerland were held to scoreless away draws as

In this re-arranged game in Tbilisi, Lokomotiv Moscow striker Malkhaz
Asatiani scored after 11 minutes to sentence Russia to their second
successive defeat and leave Group 10 wide open.

Republic of Ireland 2 v Albania 1
Robbie Keane put the Irish in front after only six minutes but the
early lead was cancelled out by an Ervin Skela equalizer only two
minutes later. The Irish were lucky to take all three points when
Gary Doherty's cross was sliced into his own net by defender Ardian
Aliaj in stoppage time, with the Albanians left protesting that
the ball had not been returned to them after they had kicked it
out of play while striker Igli Tare received treatment.
Russia came back from two goals down to force a draw with Switzerland
in Basel. Striker Alexander Frei put the Swiss two up after only
16 minutes with both Russia's goals from defender Sergei Ignashevich
- the first a header and the equalizer a disputed second-half penalty.

Switzerland edged Albania in a tense match. A Bernt Haas header
put the Swiss in front only for Altin Lala to level for Albania
after 23 minutes. Alexander Frei restored the Swiss lead and midfielder
Ricardo Cabanas added a third before a late Ervin Skela penalty
four minutes from time set up a nervous finish for the group leaders.
Spurs' duo Gary Doherty and Robbie Keane gave the much-improved
Irish all three points.
