Estádio José Alvalade (new) - 52,000 capacity.

The Estádio José Alvalade is the new home of Sporting Lisbon and built alongside Sporting's old stadium. The US$89m project is part of a larger development incorporating a shopping complex, a bowling alley, a multiplex cinema and numerous restaurants. The stadium was designed by architect Tomás Taveira who also worked on other Euro 2004 stadiums in Portugal. The vibrant colors (mainly green and yellow) and wave-like roof are features of the new stadium.

Getting To Estádio José Alvalade

Estádio José Alvalade is in the north of Lisbon near the university area. Reached by metro to Campo Grande station or buses 1 or 36 from Rossio; buses 3, 77 and 106 also run to Campo Grande.

Getting to Estádio José Alvalade is easy by Metro. The stop is Campo Grande (last stop going north on the yellow and the green lines).

There are 8 stops on the yellow line and from the southernmost stop (Rato) it takes 12 minutes to reach Campo Grande.

From Cais do Sodre on the green line it takes about 20 minutes to reach Campo Grande (12 stops).

From Apolonia railway station, take the blue line 5 stops and change at Marques de Pombal for the yellow line, from where it is 6 stops (10 minutes) to Campo Grande. Alternatively, change at the second stop on the blue line, Baixa Chiado, and take the green line to Campo Grande (10 stops/15 minutes).

The large new Campo Grande stadium complex is immediately visible on leaving the station and the stadium complex is clearly sign posted.

The new stadium was designed by Portuguese architect Tomás Taveira and replaces the old Estádio José Alvalade which had an all-seater capacity of 75,000. The colorful green and yellow design has divided most Sporting fans, many of whom feel the new stradium is too gaudy.

The stadium was inaugurated August 6, 2003 with a friendly between Sporting and Manchester United. Christiano Ronaldo's performance in the match, won 3-1 by Sporting, lead to his transfer to Manchester United soon after.
The stadium will host the 2005 UEFA Cup final as well as music concerts in the future.

Estádio da Luz (new) - 65,000 capacity.

The Estádio da Luz in Lisbon replaces the old world famous Luz stadium at a cost of US$133m and is the home of Portugal's most famous football club - Benfica. The design focuses on the 'light' theme of the stadium's name (taken from the name of the locality) and the surrounding development incorporates facilities for other sports, a swimming pool, restaurants and an entertainment centre. The transparent polycarbonate roof allow the sun's rays to filtrate and enter the arena. Estádio da Luz is the venue for the Euro 2004 final and was designed by HOK S+V+E.

Getting to Estádio da Luz

Estádio da Luz is in the north-west of the city of Lisbon, off Avenida General Norton de Matos. Colégio Militar-Luz is the nearest metro station.

The famous home of Benfica and venue for the final of Euro 2004 is easy to reach by Metro. The stop is Colégio Militar on the blue line. Follow the Saida Av. Colégio Militar/Av. Luisada signs and the stadium is immediately visible on leaving the station. From the centre of Lisbon, the nearest stop on the blue line to the Rossio (central square) is Restaradores - 2 minutes walk from the square. From here it is 9 stops to Colegio Militar Luz, which takes just under 15 minutes.

If you are staying on the coast outside Lisbon, the frequent local overland trains into Lisbon terminate at Cais do Sodre, which is also a Metro station (first/last stop on the green line). To get to Estadio de Luz from here, take the green line for one stop and change at Baixa Chiado to the blue line. From Baixa Chiado to Colegio Militar Luz it then takes around 20 minutes.

From the main railway station (Apolonia), an extension to the blue line will be ready for the finals and 12 stops will take you to Colégio Militar Luz in about 20 minutes.

Buses 4, 64, 65 and 109 run to Av. Colégio Militar.
