Premiership Football News: Summer Transfer Scene 2009

Andy Greeves looks at the summer transfer market

A Guide to the Premiership 2009 summer transfer scene - Part Two

Liverpool

Glen Johnson's likely £16m move to Liverpool from Portsmouth is expected to be the first of a number of signings for the Reds this summer, despite reported financial difficulties at present.

Rafa Benitez may suffer some frustration in the summer transfer market. He would have ideally loved to have paired Fernando Torres with his Spain strike partner David Villa, but he looks bound for Real Madrid not Anfield. Carlos Tevez is another Benitez target, but the Argentinean is more likely to sign for Manchester City.

More possible signings are Valencia's Raul Albiol and Real Madrid's Alvaro Negredo. Benitez should land these players if he is able to generate funds for their transfers selling the likes of Javier Mascherano, Jermain Pennant, Ryan Babel and possibly Xabi Alonso.

Manchester City

It's hard to know where to start when predicting the summer ahead for Manchester City.

The billionaire club have already landed Gareth Barry for a fee of £12m from Aston Villa and could easily go on to spend £100m+ in the next few months.

Roque Santa Cruz remains one of Mark Hughes' main transfer targets and is also considering a move for ex-Manchester United forward Diego Forlan. More audacious transfer speculation has linked the Eastlands club with the likes of John Terry, Samuel Eto'o, Yaya Toure, Franck Ribery and Fabio Cannavaro.

With a host of players expected to move to Manchester City, a similar number are likely to leave the club. Joe Hart, Tal Ben Haim, Micah Richards and Michael Johnson are just four names that could move on.

Manchester United

With £80m burning a hole in their back pocket from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, United fans will be expecting an extremely active summer in the transfer market.

Task one will be replacing the Portuguese star, with Bayern Munich's French winger Franck Ribery and Lyon's Karim Benzema possible new acquisitions.

Carlos Tevez looks likely to be playing for Manchester City next season after finally admitting he was not going to stay at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Wigan's Antonio Valencia is close to finalizing a move to United.

Portsmouth

Glen Johnson could well be the first a series of high profile departures from Portsmouth this summer.

Skipper Sol Campbell is expected to leave for a new challenge abroad, while Sean Davis, Sylvain Distin and Nico Kranjcar could also be bound for the Fratton Park escape doors. Djimi Traore has already left to join French side AS Monaco.

Should Portsmouth's takeover go through, the club will at least have significant funds to rebuild. Joey Barton, Gary O'Neill and Marc-Antoine Fortune (Nancy) have all been linked with a move to Pompey.

Stoke City

Stoke will be looking to capitalise on a marvellous first season in the Premiership by building an even stronger squad over the next few months.

Dijbril Cisse, formerly of Liverpool, has been linked with a move to the Britannia Stadium from Marseille, while other reported transfer targets include Stephen Kelly (Birmingham), Joe Ledley (Cardiff), Lloyd Sam (Charlton) and Ashley Barnes (Plymouth).

Dave Kitson's high profile move to Stoke last summer didn't work out for either party and he could return to former club Reading or fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Sunderland

Steve Bruce will have decent funds available to assemble a squad at his new club and could instantly raid former club Wigan for Titus Bramble.

Tottenham's Darren Bent, Rangers' Steve Davis and Manchester City's Richard Dunne are high on the Black Cats' wanted list, as are West Brom pair James Morrison and Jonathan Greening.

Kenwyne Jones may be heading in the opposite direction to Darren Bent, with Spurs known suitors of the Trinidad and Tobago international. Other outgoings may include Greg Halford, Anthony Stokes, Martin Fulop and Kieran Richardson.

Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Redknapp has made no secret of the fact Spurs have to sell before they buy this summer and a mass clear out is planned at the Lane.

Darren Bent, Gareth Bale, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Chris Gunter, David Bentley, Tom Huddlestone and Jermaine Jenas could all be sold as Redknapp makes space and funds available for players he wants.

Middlesbrough's Stuart Downing or Aston Villa's Ashley Young could make the move south to end Spurs' search for a left-sided midfielder. Kenwyne Jones, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Jan Klaus Huntelaar meanwhile, could form part of a new look Tottenham front line next season.

West Ham United

Gianfranco Zola may look to the Italian league to provide him with new players this summer. Inter Milan striker Luis Jimenez and Torino's David Di Michele are potential signings, as is former Chelsea player Sam Dalla Bona, currently available on a free transfer.

West Ham are also keen to bring Yossi Benayoun back to Upton Park if Liverpool are prepared to sell the Israeli international and are one of a host of clubs chasing Plymouth's Ashley Barnes.

Having addressed some of their financial problems, West Ham will be hoping they can maintain star players Robert Green, Dean Ashton and Matthew Upson over the next few months.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves squad will certainly need to be added to if Mick Mc Carthy's side are to make a fight of staying in the Premiership this campaign.

Danny Shittu, Andy van der Meyde, Rickie Lambert (Bristol Rovers), Joe Hart and Craig Gardner, all reported targets for the West Midlanders, would bring experience to a fairly young side if they could be attracted to Molineux.

The worry for Wolves is that the players that got them promoted last season could be targets for some of the Premiership's big boys. Everton are keen on Sylvain Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Foley, who have also drawn attention from Wigan, Blackburn and West Ham. Michael Knightly is also a target for a number of clubs.

Wigan Athletic

With Luis Valencia, Titus Bramble and Paul Scharner all expected to leave the JJB Stadium this summer, Wigan will have some serious rebuilding work to do.

New boss Luis Martinez may use his knowledge of the Championship to lure the likes of Kris Commons (Derby) and Lloyd Sam (Charlton) to Wigan, while Jermaine Pennant, Steven Davis and Joey Barton could also be targets for the Latics.

Martinez has already made one signing, capturing Espanyol playmaker Jordi Gomez, who spent a season on loan with Swansea City last campaign.
