Premiership Football News: Transfer Window
Andy Greeves looks at the January transfer window
A Guide to the Premiership January transfer window - Part Two
Manchester United
Following the signings of Serbian pair Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic
from Partizan Belgrade, Sir Alex Ferguson has declared 'that's
it' for United's business in this transfer window.
21-year-old left-winger Tosic is likely to be handed a first-team
run out this season, while 17-year-old Ljajic will remain on loan
at Partizan until the end of the campaign. Carlos Tevez has warned
Manchester United that he will leave if on-going contact negotiations
are not resolved, but it's not likely he will move this January.
Middlesbrough
Stuart Downing's possible switch to Tottenham has dominated
the early January transfer window talk. Spurs have launched two
bids for the winger already, with a reported £14.5m bid turned
down on January 7th. Boro Chief Executive Keith Lamb insists the
club will not let Downing or any other senior player leave in the
transfer window.
Newcastle's Alan Smith has been linked with Boro, as part
of an unlikely swap deal involving Mido, while Jimmy Bullard and
Celtic winger Aiden McGeady are said to be on manager Gareth
Southgate's 'wanted' list.
Newcastle United
Shay Given could be one of the major movers this January, having
expressed his desire to leave St James' Park. Manchester City
have tabled an £8m bid for the Irishman and Spurs also believed
to be interested in the Irish stopper.
Joe Kinnear has described his shortage of central midfield options
as 'serious', with Nicky Butt, Joey Barton and Danny
Guthrie. Rangers star Barry Ferguson is rumoured to be on the verge
of a £3m move to Newcastle, along with teammates Allan McGregor
and Madjid Bougherra. Rangers deny this, saying they have no desire
to let any of these players leave Ibrox.
Portsmouth
Having lost both Jermain Defoe and Lassana Diarra in recent weeks,
Pompey's odds on getting relegated this season have been slashed.
Despite the club's precarious financial position, Tony Adams
admits funds raised by the sale of those players has to be re-invested
in his squad. Former Fratton Park favourite Gary O'Neill has
been linked with a £5m return from Middlesbrough, while Brazilian
midfielder Edu could join on loan from Valencia.
Adams is also a known admirer of Newcastle's Joey Barton.
Stoke City
Stoke's FA Cup humbling at the hands of League One side
Hartlepool United raised concerns over the strength of the Potters'
squad.
Tony Pullis is closing in on the signing of West Ham winger Matthew
Etherington and Aston Villa's Marlon Harewood.
It could be a busy month for Stoke, who are also trying to pull
off the signings of Wigan's Henri Camara and Cardiff City's
Joe Ledley.
Sunderland
Despite spending £50m during Roy Keane's tenure at
the Stadium of Light, Sunderland continue to languish in the lower
regions of the Premiership.
New boss Ricky Sbragia is set to be given £10m to improve
his squad this month, with a further £20m set to be spent
in the summer.
Sami Hyypia would offer the Black Cats' backline much needed
experience, if the Finnish international could be prized away from
Anfield. Marseille Modeste M'Bami is a reported forward target,
with El-Hadji Diouf set to move on in the next few weeks.
Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs have kept up with their tradition of spending big in January
transfer window, recapturing Jermain Defoe in a deal worth up to
£16m.
Harry Redknapp has spoken of his desire to bring a further three
or four players to White Hart Lane sooner rather than later. Ghanian
midfielder Stephen Appiah is currently on trial and would bring
much needed solidity to Spurs if he can prove his fitness.
Lyon's Brazilian striker Fred could be brought in to be
paired with Defoe upfront for the Lilywhites, while German forward
Lukas Podolski and Celtic's midfielder Scott Brown are reported
targets.
Redknapp is also chasing a left-back as cover for Gareth Bale.
West Bromwich Albion
With money at a premium at The Hawthorn's, Tony Mowbray
is looking for loan signings to shore up his side until the end
of the season.
Jay Simpson has been recruited from Arsenal on a temporary basis
and Nancy striker Marc-Antoine Fortune is also set to arrive on
loan.
Danish winger Peter Lovenkrands could arrive on a free transfer,
having been released by German side Schalke.
West Ham United
West Ham desperately need to address their debts by selling as
many players surplus to requirements as possible.
The likely sales of Luis Boa Morte, Matthew Etherington and Calum
Davenport would generate around £8m. Craig Bellamy may also
be sold if Manchester City or Tottenham if the price is right.
Former West Ham star Julian Dicks has urged the club to hold on
to their stars, such as Bellamy, Matt Upson, Scott Parker and Robert
Green, saying they risk relegation if those players are not maintained.
Wigan Athletic
Wigan are looking to build on their excellent position in the
Premiership by adding further quality to their squad this month.
Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega is set to arrive in a £4.5m
deal, providing he can secure a work permit, amid speculation Emile
Heskey and Henri Camera could leave the JJB Stadium.
