Zidane to hang up his boots in 2007

Friday, February 4 2005.

Zinedine Zidane has announced that he intends to retire in 2007. The Real Madrid midfielder has decided to hang up his boots when his existing contract runs out at the end of the 2006/07 season.

2007 and no further

The French player, currently in his fourth season at the Madrid club, announced today that “my contract finishes in 2007 and I want to end my career that year. Retiring before then is not up for discussion but of course you never know what might happen. But while I don’t know what’s on the cards after 2007, I’d definitely like to continue playing until then”.

One more UEFA Champions League

Zidane arrived at Real in the Summer of 2001 and won a Champions League medal with them. Before that, he had played for AS Cannes, Bordeaux and Juventus. The midfielder of Algerian descent announced on the French Canal + in the very same interview that he would like to win another European medal before calling time on his playing career.

Contract Renewal

Zidane retired from international football last August after a career which included no less than 93 caps and 26 goals. His current contract, signed a year ago, contains a clause allowing an extension after 2007 for a further 12 months.
