Baden-Baden is a hilly town in the North Black Forest surrounded
by grand vistas of mountain and sylvan wilderness. It is remarkable
for being an ancient settlement that has not known any war or destruction
since it was razed in 1643 by the French during the 30 Years War.
Founded by the Romans and originally named Aurelia Aquensis in honor
of the Emperor Aurelius Severus, it was - and became again in the
19th century - a place for relaxation and pleasure with its natural
hot springs and beautiful surroundings. The Roman legacy is still
apparent in the ancient vapor baths that were discovered and excavated
in 1847, and the imprint of the 19th century is still strong in
the ornate and majestic architecture of its hotels and spas, the
most prominent being the center of the city's life and reputation,
the Kurhaus and Casino.
Until 1931 the town was plainly named Baden. The double name Baden-Baden
is an abbreviation of 'Baden in Baden', or 'Baden in the state of
Baden'.
Aldstadt The historic center of Baden-Baden’s
life is its Aldstadt district, with its Markt (Market)
plaza and Stiftskirche: the 15th century gothic monastery
church worth checking out for its harrowing crucifix by the Renaissance
sculptor Nicolaus Gerhaert. Open daily from 8 am to 6 pm.
Caracalla Spa A little further west is Germany’s hottest
spa: at 68 degrees C (154 degrees F) the huge modern 3000 sq meter
(9842 sq foot) Caracalla Spa offers the visitor a long, leisurely
taste of Baden-Baden’s original attraction, with spa experiences
of many kinds including an outdoor pool. Named after its original
patron, the Emperor Caracalla.
On Römerplatz 1. Daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (closed on Good
Friday and 24/25 December).
Am Friedrichsbad For a more traditional spa experience go
to the neighboring 125-year-old palatial Am Friedrichsbad,
‘the Roman-Irish bath’. Preserved in all its old splendor.
On Römerplatz 1. Mon-Sat 9am-10pm, Sun/public holidays noon-8pm.
Final admission two hours before closing time.
No clothes. Mixed bathing except Mon & Thu.
Romische Badruinen Between these two spas are the restored
Romische Badruinen (Roman bath ruins) dating from 2000 years
ago and rediscovered in 1847, originally used by Roman soldiers.
Includes museum with interactive displays.
On Römerplatz 1. Mar 16-Nov 31: daily 11am-1pm & 2-5pm;
Dec 1-Mar 15: daily 2-5pm.
Stadtmuseum Further west, towards the river, is the new
Stadtmuseum (City Museum) featuring Baden-Baden’s spa
heritage from Roman times to the present.
On Lichtentaler Allee 10. Tue-Sun 10am-6pm; Wed 10am-8pm; closed
Mon.
Kurhaus & Casino Baden-Baden’s crowning jewel and
the center of its social life is the Kurhaus, west across
the Oosbach River from the main part of town. Its right wing incorporates
the lavishly decorated Baden-Baden Casino – Germany’s
oldest and largest - while the left wing houses a high-class restaurant
looking out over the gardens. Minimum bets at the Casino are 5 Euros,
and the games guests can play are French and American roulette,
baccarat, black jack, poker, punto banco and Klondyke.
Gaming hours: daily 2pm-2am; Fri/Sat 2pm-3am.

10am-noon Oct-Mar. Last admission: 11:30 am.
