Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Zugspitz

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the capital of alpine
Bavaria and Germany’s most famous resort, having for a backdrop
Germany's highest mountain the Zugspitze. Originally two towns that
merged in 1936 for the Winter Olympics, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is
a year-round spa and resort founded by the Romans. Of the two original
towns that make up its name, Garmisch is more upmarket, with many
boutiques and restaurants. Nearby is Kurpark where you can
take in open-air concerts. Within the park is Stiftung Aschenbrenner—open
9-noon, 3-6, and free—that contains a wonderful collection
of Meissen porcelain and historic toys. Also found in Garmisch is
the villa of Richard Strauss. It is on the eastern edge of
town.
Though it is lovely in the summer months, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
is best known for its winter sports and activities. Skiing runs
from December to April, and later at higher elevations. There
is more to the town(s) than sports, though: it is blessed with
many Upper Bavarian homes. Near Marienplatz there is the
lovely church St. Martin. Also of interest is a museum in
Partenkirchen of the area’s history, Werdenfelser Heimatuseum.
The building that houses the museum was built around 1200. It costs €1.50
and is open Tuesday-Friday, 10-1 and 3-6; on weekends it is open
from 10-1. Another Partenkirchen attraction is the Chapel
of St. Anton. It is all pink and silver, both inside and out.
The primary attraction in the region though is Zugspitze,
which at 2,964 meters (9,720 feet) above sea level is the highest
mountain in Germany. There are two ways to the top: a 75-minute
ride on a cog railway or a 10-minute trip by cable car. The cable
car costs €43 in summer.
Walks in the neighboring mountains afford some of the most scenic
views in Bavaria.
