Stadion (new) - 44,000 capacity.
The previous Zentralstadion - which opened in 1956 - was once
the largest stadium in Germany, with a capacity of 100,000. The
new stadium is a purpose-built football specific ground set within
the old stadium walls. Building got underway in November 2000 and
is was inaugurated in March 2004 at an estimated cost of 90.6 million
Euros.
Getting to Zentral Stadion
The stadium - Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 105 - was the home ground
of VfB Leipzig before the club went into liquidization in 2004 and
is located in the western zone of the city. FC Sachsen
Leipzig played at the stadium from 2004 to 2007 though VfB Leipzig hope to return one
day as FC Lokomotiv Leipzig. The present tenants are RasenBallsport Leipzig, (RB Leipzig).
Tram:
Take #3, #5 or #15 from the Hauptbahnhof along Jahnallee or walk.
It is about 20 minutes on foot from the station.
Car:
There is car parking available at the Clara Zetkin park.
