The Westcliff Hotel is one of the Johannesburg's most famous and luxurious hotels - a favorite haunt of heads of state and movie stars.

Situated on a hill overlooking Johannesburg Zoo and the northern suburbs, the Westcliff Hotel is set in vast Tuscan-style grounds of its own. Rooms, modelled on the homes of the Johannesburg rich and famous set at the turn of the century, feature marble bathrooms, private balconies and guaranteed opulence.

The separate buildings that make up the hotel pay homage to the styles of the great architects of the randlords, men such as Sir Herbert Baker (1862-1946) and Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944), who left their mark on South African architecture, building the mansions of the mining magnates.

There are microbuses and club cars available to tour the hotel's lovely gardens. The La Belle Terrase and Loggia restaurants serve both international and African cuisine at a very high standard. The hotel's complimentary shuttle bus ferries hotel guests to and from shopping malls, offices and restaurants in nearby Parkview, Rosebank, and Sandton.

Not to be missed are a cocktail in the Westcliff's colonial-retro Polo Lounge and a "safari swim" in the hotel's huge pool. Afternoon tea is served daily in the conservatory.
