South Africa Travel + Tourism Guide: Blyde River Canyon
Blyde River Canyon
Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga north of Nelspruit is one of the
largest canyons in the world. The canyon forms the northern part
of the Drakensberg escarpment.
Blyde River Canyon is 26km long and on average about 800m deep.
It is one of the most magnificent natural features in South Africa.
The canyon is part of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve
stretching 60km from Graskop in the south to Blydepoort Dam in the
north. Superb views can be had from various viewpoints reached by
road: the Pinnacles, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the
famous Three Rondavels.

The canon is also popular with hikers along the Blyde River Canyon
Hiking Trail. Hiking tours can be booked for the 3-day hikes. The
Blyde River Canyon Adventure Centre is at Blydepoort Dam.
Blyde River Canyon Access
Blyde River Canyon can be explored from Graskop. The R532 runs
along the western edge of the canyon. The R534 loops through the
