South Africa Travel + Tourism Guide: Johannesburg Botanic Garden
Johannesburg Botanic Garden
Johannesburg Botanic Garden is located in the northern suburbs
of Johannesburg, west of Emmarentia
Dam, about 6km from the old CBD. The Botanic Garden is at the
northern edge of the very large Jan van Riebeeck Park.
Established in 1968, the gardens cover 125 hectares and are arranged
thematically. There is a noted Rose Garden with around 10,000 roses,
a Shalespeare Garden (a garden that cultivates plants mentioned
in the plays and poems of William Shakespeare), a Herb Garden, a
Succulent Garden, a Herbarium and a Cycad Garden.
Other facilities include a restaurant and a Wedding Chapel - as
the Botanic Garden is a popular backdrop for Joburg's newly-weds
as well as hundreds of dog-walkers and weekend picnickers.

There are some 2,500 specimens of succulents and over 20,000 indigenous
trees in the gardens. In the summer the Botanic Garden plays hosts
to a series of Sunset Concerts.
Upmarket hotels in Joburg's northern suburbs aimed at the business
traveler include the Hilton
Sandton at 138 Rivonia Road, the Protea
Balalaika Sandton Hotel at 20 Maude Street, the luxurious Sandton
Sun & Towers Intercontinental on the corner of Fifth Street
and Alice Lane and the soaring Michelangelo
