South Africa Travel + Tourism Guide: Johannesburg Securities Exchange
JSE
The Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) is located in Sandton,
a northern suburb of Johannesburg.
The JSE was established in 1887 after the gold rush on the Witwatersrand
and the first stock exchange was located in the old CBD at the corner
of Commissioner and Simmonds Streets in central Johannesburg.
The exchange moved to its present location at One Exchange Square,
on the corner of Maude Street and Gwen Lane in Sandton in 2000,
as businesses fled the high-crime rate and urban blight in the old
CBD.

The JSE is the largest stock exchange in Africa and presently
the 16th largest in the world. Over 470 companies are listed and
in 2006 the market capitalisation of the JSE was around US$579 billion.
