South Africa Travel + Tourism Guide: Brightwater Commons
Brightwater Commons
The Brightwater Commons, formerly the Randburg Waterfront in Johannesburg,
is a version of the popular V&A
Waterfront development in Cape Town.
Built in 1996, this huge entertainment and shopping complex is
built around an artificial lake fed by the Jukskei River. The centerpiece
is a number of illuminated musical water fountains shooting up to
50m high. The fountains operate from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Mondays
to Thursdays and at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
There are over 50 restaurants, plus shops, pubs and children's
entertainments at the still expanding site.
The redeveloped Brightwater Commons has green open spaces, a multiplex
cinema, skatepark, mini-golf, Lazerquest shooting game (similar
to paintball), banks, a flea-market and a Pick-n'-Pay supermarket.

Located west of Sandton, Brightwater
Commons is best reached by car. Take the N1 and get off at the Malibongwe
Drive exit. Then turn left onto Republic Road.
Upmarket hotels in Sandton aimed at the rich business traveler
include the Hilton
Sandton at 138 Rivonia Road, the Protea
Balalaika Sandton Hotel at 20 Maude Street, the luxurious Sandton
Sun & Towers Intercontinental on the corner of Fifth Street
and Alice Lane and the soaring Michelangelo
Towers Hotel at 8 Maude Street.
