World Cup 2010 Qualifying Draw & Groups: Asia
Asia will have 4.5 places slots for the 2010 World Cup. 43 teams
will compete for the slots from 5 groups.
PRELIMINARY COMPETITION
A first preliminary round encompassing all AFC nations except
the top five seeds Australia, Iran, Japan, Korea Republic and Saudi
Arabia began in October 2007.
Groups
The teams are drawn into 5 groups of 4 teams. The top two from
each group go through to a final round of qualifying, where the
10 teams are drawn into two groups of five. The winners and runners
up of each group will automatically qualify for World Cup 2010,
while the two third placed teams will playoff against each other
to enter a playoff against the winning team from the Oceania zone
for a World Cup spot.

New Zealand qualified for the 2010 World Cup after a 1-0 win in
Wellington in front of 35,000 fans. Rory Fallon scored the decisive
goal just before half time and keeper Mark Paston saved a second
half penalty.
