World Cup 2010 Qualifying Fixtures, Results & Table: North,
Central America & Caribbean CONCACAF
The North, Central America & Caribbean Zone has 4.5 spots for
the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
There are four rounds of qualifying to determine the eventual qualifying
teams. Mexico, USA and Costa Rica are fancied to progress.
Round One
First the 35 Participating Member Associations (PMAs) were seeded
based on the FIFA ranking of May 2007. The 23 PMAs ranked from 13
to 35 took part in 11 home-and-away matches and one bye - St. Vincent
& The Grenadines. The winners and St. Vincent & The Grenadines
progressed to Round Two.
Round Two
The 24 remaining teams play in 12 home-and-away matches. The winners
advance to Round Three.
Round Three
The 12 remaining teams are placed in 3 groups of 4 teams. The
group winners and runners-up advance to Round Four.
Round Four
The remaining six teams play off in a home-and-away group. The
top 3 teams qualify for South Africa. The 4th placed team enters
a home-and-away playoff with the 5th placed South American team.

Costa Rica 0 Uruguay 1
A first half goal from Diego Lugano gave Urugauy the edge going
in to the second leg. Costa Rica were reduced to 10 men in the second
half with the sending off of Randall Azofeifa.

Kerry Baptiste scores twice to earn a draw for Trinidad & Tobago.
USA 2 v Costa Rica 2
A goal in the waning seconds of injury time from Jonathan Bornstein
pulled the USA even - and denies Costa Rica the third qualification
spot in the region. In spite of two goals from Brian Ruiz - and
being seconds from an automatic trip to South Africa - the Ticos
must now go into a playoff round with Uruguay.
El Salvador 0 v Honduras 1
A win for Honduras puts it through to the World Cup. Joy in Tegucigalpa.

Mexico 4 v El Salvador 1
Cuauhtémoc Blanco pulled the strings as Mexico qualified
for South Africa. Blanco scored one, pressurized Marvin Gonzalez
into an own goal with Palencia and Vela adding the other Mexican
goals. Julio Martinez scored the consolation for El Salvador.
Honduras 2 v USA 3
In an exciting match Landon Donovan's 71st minute goal sent the
USA to the finals in South Africa. Julio Cesar de Leon had a brace
for Honduras as did Conor Casey for the USA. Carlos Pavon missed
a penalty at the death for Honduras, blasting over Tim Howard's
bar after Jonathan Spector's handball. All the goals came in the
second half and the late penalty miss was enough to send the USA
to its 6th successive World Cup.
Costa Rica 4 v Trinidad & Tobago 0
Costa Rica leap-frogged Honduras into the 3rd automatic qualifying
spot with a demolition job on T&T. Alvaro Saborio was the man-of-the-match
with a brace and an assist.

Charlie Davis was impressive for the US, scoring early. Miguel Sabah
hit a bullet in the 82nd minute to seal the win.

for the Ticos.
USA 2 v Honduras 1
Goals from Landon Donovan (43" pen) and Carlos Bocanegra (68")
cancelled out an early Carlos Costly strike for the visitors.
El Salvador 2 v Mexico 1
Disaster for new coach Javier Aguirre who can do no better than
Sven-Goran Eriksson. The Aztecas have not missed a World Cup since
Italia 90 but are in danger of doing so again. Julio Martinez (11)
opened the scoring for the hosts before substitute Cuauhtemoc Blanco
equalized from the spot. Eliseo Quintanilla won the match with another,
late penalty.

A second-string USA ended Guatemala's involvement in qualifying
for South Africa 2010 with a 2-0 win in Commerce City. Kenny Cooper
and Freddy Adu did the damage for the hosts. The Americans finish
top of the section and will be joined in the last round by runners-up
Trinidad and Tobago, who beat Cuba 3-0 in Port of Spain thanks to
goals from Kenwyne Jones, just back from injury, Dwight Yorke and
Keon Daniel.

DaMarcus Beasley with a brace, Landon Donovan, Brian Ching, Villarreal's
Jozy Altidore, and Oguchi Onyewu got the goals that secured the
USA's place in the next qualifying round. Jenzy Munoz scored Cuba's
goal when the score was 2-0.

In a tension-fuelled final matchday of the penultimate round of
North, Central American and Caribbean Zone qualifying, Honduras
beat Mexico 1-0 (thanks to a Ricardo Osorio own goal) to put both
teams through to the final 'hexagonal' round.

In the night's early game, Suriname and Haiti drew 1-1 in Paramaribo
in a game that meant nothing to either eliminated team.
El Salvador 1 v Costa Rica 3
Costa Rica defeated El Salvador 3-1 at the Cuscatlan in the late
game, with a brace from Roy Myrie and a goal from Jose Fernandez.
Both sides were already guaranteed of first and second place respectively
in Group 3, and progression.
