World Cup 2010 Stadiums: Royal
Bafokeng Stadium (Rustenburg)
Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg
Royal Bafokeng Stadium was originally built as a venue for the
1995 Rugby World Cup but has established itself predominately as
a football ground since that tournament.
The stadium hosted South Africa's World Cup qualifying game against
Bakino Faso in 2001 and has stage many Premier Soccer League games,
despite Rustenburg not
having a football club of its own. In addition, four matches of
the 2009 Confederation
Cup were selected to be played at the stadium, further enhancing
its football reputation.
In the run up to the World Cup, the Royal Bafokeng's capacity
has increased from 38,000 to 42,000 as part of a $45m refurbishment.
The stadium's main stand has been enlarged, with a new cantilever
roof built and improved seating installed. New floodlights and scoreboards
have also been fitted along with a hi-tech public address system
for the multi-purpose venue.

Supporters will be set a way back from the action at the Royal
Bafokeng Stadium. This is because the running track which was originally
built at the ground in the 1990's has been maintained for the World
Cup.
A total of five World Cup matches are scheduled for the Royal
Bafokeng Stadium, four at the group stage and one match in the second
round.
Stadium Access
Park & Ride areas for football supporters will be in operation
during the World Cup situated off main roads leading into Rustenburg
. One will be at the Kloof Holiday Resort, 500m from the Kloof Interchange
of the N4. Another site will be between the city centre and the
stadium on the old N4 and a final site will be located on the R565,
just outside the city centre.
Significant improvements have been made to the Rustenburg traffic
infrastructure for the tournament. In addition to the Park &
Ride schemes, link roads to the stadium have been re-built, ring-roads
have been constructed and the one of the main roads in Rustenburg
(Fatima Bhayat Street) has been pedestrianised. Extra shuttle buses
will run between the city and stadium on match days.
Rustenburg does not have its own airport, the nearest being in
Sun City, 50km away. It is not uncommon for people to travel to
Rustenburg from Johannesburg
or Pretoria - both cities
are less than a 90 minute drive away.
