South African Domestic Flights

South African domestic flights.The quickest way to get around such a huge country as South Africa is by plane.

South Africa has three international airports in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban with large provincial airports in Bloemfontein, East London, George, Kimberley, Pilanesberg, Port Elizabeth and Upington. There are around 100 smaller airports in other cities.

Flight fares range from first class to cut price tickets. Passengers need to be at the airport at least an hour before departure for domestic flights. Tickets can be booked online.

Carriers

As well as being the international flag-carrier, South African Airways (Tel: +27 11 978 5313/0861 359722) and its subsidiaries SA Airlink (Tel: +27 11 978 1111/0861 606 606) and SA Express (Tel: +27 11 978 5577/011 978 9900) provide domestic flights between many of South Africa's major cities and main tourist attractions.

SA Airlink flies to Nelspruit, Polokwane and Pietermaritzburg and other cities from Joburg and George, Upington and Nelspruit from Cape Town.

Other domestic carriers include British Airways Comair (Tel: 0860 435 922) and its budget subsidiary Kulula (Tel: +27 11 921 0111/0861 KULULA (585852) with flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth and Cape Town to Durban.

Other no-frills operators are 1Time (0861 345 345) and Mango (Tel: 0861 162646).

1Time has flights from Joburg to Cape Town, Durban, East London, George, Port Elizabeth and Zanzibar. Mango, SAA's budget airline has flights between Cape Town to Joburg, Bloemfontein and Durban; from Joburg to Cape Town & Durban

Flights Times

Johannesburg to Cape Town is two hours; Johannesburg to Durban is 1 hour, 15 minutes; Cape Town to Durban is two hours; Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth is one hour, 40 minutes.

Flying Details

Check-in times are normally one hour before departure for a domestic flight. The no-frills options have a pay onboard service only.
