Travel: Buses
South African Bus Transport
South Africa's buses are normally referred to as coaches. The three
big domestic bus companies Greyhound,
Intercape
and Translux
cover most of the country and also have international bus routes
to neighboring countries, such as Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique
and Zimbabwe. Fares are calculated by distance traveled.
Greyhound (Tel: 083 915 9000) and Translux are based in Johannesburg,
Intercape (Tel: 021 380 4400) near Cape
Town.
In general, bus transport in South Africa is safe, cheap and quicker
than corresponding rail links.
The big South African companies also run no-frills services: City
To City (Tel: 011 774 3333) is operated by Translux and Citiliner
by Greyhound.
Baz Bus (Tel:
021 439 2323) is geared to backpackers and travelers offering hop-on-hop-off
services between Cape Town and J'Burg and Cape Town-Port
Elizabeth and Cape Town-Durban.
SA Roadlink
(Tel: 011 333 2223) has departures from over 20 cities in South
Africa including Bloemfontein,
Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg, Nelspruit,
Polokwane, Port Elizabeth,
Pretoria and Welkom.
South Africa City Buses
South Africa's urban bus network is catered for by minibus taxis.
However minibus taxis can be dangerous and unroadworthy and car
hire or taking a metered taxi may be a preferred option by most
travelers in large cities. Out of town, minibus taxis may be your
only option, and despite long waits, should be safe and enjoyable.
