South African Taxis and Minibuses

South African MinibusPublic transportation in South Africa is, with the exception of some long-haul trains and buses, very limited. Alternatives include taxis, and this is how the majority of South Africans themselves get around.

However, you are not likely to go out of your hotel, raise your hand, and flag a cab. For both safety reasons and practicality, you should avoid attempting this.

Another slightly safer option is minibus taxis. They are essentially like a bus service, but without a timetable, formal stops, or marked vehicles. An estimated 150,000 of them roam the streets of South Africa.

You will meet ordinary South Africans, and these mini-buses will go anywhere. They are also cheap.

You should however be careful with the minibuses as well. There are few regulations and the vehicles are often in poor condition. Also, the drivers are famous – infamous – for driving in less than prudent ways and also for charging based upon what they think the client will pay.

Your next taxi option is metered taxis. These must be called first, so it is necessary to have your hotel to help you. This is your best option.

To and from the airport:

One examle of a minibus is Magic Bus.

The trip from your hotel to the Johannesburg Airport will cost 170 - 200 Rand per person.

They have service in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Johannesburg +27 (0)11 608-1662
Cape Town +27 (0)11 534-9105

Once in a city, you should either arrange for a cab at your hotel or wait at a cab stand.

Cape Town Taxi.Cab Stands

It is always best to call ahead for a cab. However if you wait at major cab stands you should be able to flag a cab.

In Cape Town, Green Market Square and Adderley Street both have cab stands.
