The Primera División (First Division) aka La Liga (The League) is Spain's premier football club competition and one of the most popular soccer leagues in the world with its biggest teams including Real Madrid and Barcelona attracting some of the world's best players. Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Villa are some of the big names that play in Spain.
La Liga began in 1928 and is presently contested by 20 teams in the first division. The three last placed teams in La Liga's Primera División are relegated to the Segunda División, and the top three teams from the Segunda División replace them in La Liga.
