Taxis in Poland can be found outside airports, bus stations, railways stations and in many town center locations especially near the major town squares in such cities as Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan. Taxis throughout Poland can also be called on the phone, which works out cheaper. Make sure your taxi has an illuminated roof sign with the word "Taxi" on it.
Polish taxis can be hailed on the street but often they are full, it is better to find a taxi rank. Polish taxis are cheap by western European standards. Fares increase at night after 10pm and on Saturdays and Sundays.
Make sure your driver turns on the meter and by law your driver should also give you a receipt, though you may have to ask. Fares are around 6 zloty for flag fall and around 2.30-4.50 zloty per kilometer.
Tipping is not required but also not unappreciated. Longer journeys, between towns for example, or the trip to Auschwitz from Krakow, can be negotiated.
