Ukraine has a temperate continental climate with very cold, snowy winters and warm, often very hot summers, especially in the south. The weather is warmer in winter than Russia to the east but still extremely cold when the winds blow from Siberia.
Temperatures are more pleasant on the southern Crimean coast on the Black Sea which experiences a drier, Mediterranean-style climate year round.
Spring and autumn are both short and mild; winter's coldest temperatures are felt to the east and on the Carpathian Mountains, which offer relief from the sometimes oppresive heat in summer.
June weather is pleasant with average temperatures around 25 degrees centigrade in the capital Kyev. The heaviest rainfall is also in the summer months of June, July and August. July is normally the wettest month.
Lviv experiences cooler summers than Kyiv. The winters in Kharkiv can be among some of the coldest in the Ukraine.
