Confusion reigns over Tevez transfer request

Manchester City captain and Argentina international striker Carlos Tevez insists he will leave the Premier League club despite his transfer request being rejected out of hand.

However, there is considerable confusion about why Tevez, just 17 months after joining the Premier League's richest club from rivals Manchester United, wants to leave with City standing joint top of the EPL table.

The 26-year-old has repeatedly expressed his disillusionment with football and maintained his decision to retire before he reaches 30, but has also made clear he misses his two daughters who remain in Buenos Aires.

There have also been rumours of a dislike of Roberto Mancini's regime, although his latest statement pointed the finger at the club's hierarchy but not owner Sheik Mansour.

Chelsea slump over: Ancelotti

English Premier League champions Chelsea are out of their worst form slump for a decade, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti shrugged off Didier Drogba's stoppage time penalty miss against Spurs on Sunday – which would have handed the Blues a come-from-behind 2-1 victory – claiming ''it doesn't matter'' because his side had played well enough to win.

He said: ''I think that we deserved to win; we were very close to winning. We missed a penalty but it doesn't matter. I think that we played well and I think that our bad moment is behind us.''

Labbadia the latest at Stuttgart

Stuttgart have moved onto their third coach of a turbulent season after sacking head coach Jens Keller following just two months in charge.

Former Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia has been recruited as his replacement.

The side have won just three times all season after a disastrous start under Christian Gross and languish second from bottom in the Bundesliga table.

"I am aware of how hard the task will be, but I'm confident we'll achieve our goal," said Labbadia at his first press conference.

Estudiantes win fifth Argentine league title

Estudiantes left it late but a second-half brace from Uruguayan international Hernan Rodrigo Lopez secured the necessary 2-0 victory over Arsenal to claim their fifth Argentine league title.

Lopez replaced captain Juan Sebastian Veron, who won the Argentine second division title in 1995 during his first spell with the club.

Estudiantes finished on 45 points, two points ahead of Velez Sarsfield who ended their campaign with a 2-0 win over Racing.

Eto'o and Gyan in the race for Africa's best

Samuel Eto'o and Asamoah Gyan are the favourites to be crowned the 2010 CAF Footballer of the Year.

Eto'o helped Inter Milan win the Italian and Champions League titles as well as the Italian Cup, but suffered a disappointing World Cup with Cameroon.

Gyan, by contrast, excelled for Ghana in South Africa, earning himself a £13m close season move to Premier League side Sunderland.

Chelsea's Didier Drogba rounds out the shortlist with the winner announced on December 20.
