Reds versus the Red Devils in the FA Cup

The English FA Cup draw for the third round has thrown together two of the country's most heralded clubs. Current Premier League leaders Manchester United will host Liverpool on the weekend of the 8–9 January.

Manchester United and Liverpool have won the FA Cup 18 times between them and have met twice in the final itself, in 1977 and 1996, when Eric Cantona scored a memorable late winner to help United complete the league and cup double that year.

Holders Chelsea meet Ipswich Town, the Championship side managed by former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, while non-league York City travel to face in-form Premiership side Bolton Wanderers.

Bale star continues to rise

Tottenham's Gareth Bale has been shortlisted for the FIFA/FIPro World XI 2010 after a stunning six months.

Bale is one of 17 Premier League nominees, but the only candidate from Wales, and his inclusion caps a remarkable change of fortunes since Harry Redknapp joined Spurs and converted the former Southampton trainee to the left flank.

He has since made his mark on the Champions League, with two stunning performances against champions Inter Milan drawing plaudits from across Europe.

The winner, tipped to be one of world champions Spain's 10 inclusions in the 55-strong list, will be revealed in January.

Van Gaal: Best so far for Bayern

Coach Louis van Gaal has claimed that Bayern Munich are on the right track after Saturday's 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt lifted them up to fifth in the German Bundesliga.

Despite growing internal pressure on Van Gaal following his rebuke of star midfielder Franck Ribery last week, the victory extended the German champions' unbeaten streak to seven games, but they remain 11 points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

"The best thing was the confidence and passion shown by my players. And the fans saw that. I am very happy because I think we're on the right track," said the Dutchman.

'Lazy' Veloso faces quick exit

Genoa's summer acquisition Miguel Veloso faces a speedy exit in the January transfer window unless he can alter his early impression at the Serie A side.

The club's president Enrico Preziosi last week claimed that Veloso, the Portuguese nation team player who signed from Sporting before the start of the season, must "wake up before January" or face being sold.

“What do I make of Veloso? There are some players who don’t realise what it means to play for Genoa and in January we can make them understand,” slammed Preziosi in the Secolo XIX newspaper.

“It is better to have donkeys who run rather than thoroughbred horses who stand still."

Premier League is too greedy: Tevez

Outspoken Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez has again risked alienating a section of his team-mates by claiming that modern footballers are money-hungry and unambitious.

It what could be interpreted as an attack on some of Manchester City's headline-grabbing young guns such as Adam Johnson and Mario Balotelli, Tevez also claimed that rising stars show little respect for the game's true achievers.

The Argentine striker has won 13 titles in his career to date.

"I don't want to play anymore. I'm tired of football but also tired of people who work in football," he said. "I'm talking seriously. Football is only about money and I don't like it.

"There are so many agents with really young footballers. It's awful as these young players are not interested in winning titles. They only want money."
