World Cup 2022

Welcome to the desert: World Cup on the scorching sand? No worries - the whole of Qatar will be one huge refrigerator!

Ozren Podnar

Qatar is a miniature emirate on the Arabian Peninsula, on the Eastern coast of the Persian Gulf.

The smallest country to which the World Cup has ever been awarded occupies just 11,000 square kilometers, half of the territory of Slovenia, the tiniest participant at this year's World Cup in South Africa.

Of its 1.68 million citizens, 998,000 live in the capital Doha and 75% of the population are immigrants from India, Pakistan and elsewhere. Disastrously, there are 3.5 times more men than women - consequence of the typically male jobs Qatar offers.

The small area will not be a problem for hosting the World Cup because Qatar's 89 billion dollar annual GNP can finance plenty of phenomenal stadia and accomodation sufficient for hundreds of thousands of fans who will head for the desert in 2022.

All the stadia, training camps and hotels will be easily accessible from the new International Airport in Doha, to be finalized by the end of 2011. The road network will be improved, and a part of the transportation in Qatar will be carried out by boat, since Qatar is a narrow peninsula, 80% surrounded by water. Only, who will be able to stand the heat?

Qatar is a country of eternal sun, where it rains more infrequently than in southern California. From early May until late October the daily temperatures regularly rise above 40 degrees centigrade. That is not the atmosphere in which it is desirable to watch, let alone play soccer.

But, the organizers have pledged to install supermodern air-conditioning equipment in all the stadia, training centres, fan zones and the transport network. At all the key places the temperature will be maintained at an agreeable 27 degrees Centigrade: when the atmosphere heats up, the fans will remain cool.

Apart from cooling the facilities with cutting-edge technology, Qatar will see to it that the the carbon dioxide emission will be eliminated through a nation-wide switch to natural energy sources, notably solar power. In Qatar apparently the sun shines all year long.

Miracle: transportable stadia!

Qatari ruler Hamad bin Khalifa Al Tani will not spare expense. Nine new stadia will be built and three renovated. The new stadia will be modular and dismantlable, so that it will be possible to pull the stands apart and transport them. In fact, the stadium to be built in the Doha port will be dismantled and relocated after the Cup. Lusail Iconic Stadium in Al-Daayen will entertain the inaugural match and the finals. It is planned to put on sale a total of 2,869,000 tickets.
