Sporting predictions by Chris Clegg - Putting your money where your mouth is!
A game of two halves
With over half of this year's world cup games over, the England team and fans are desperately hoping the second half is much better than the first. It's a similar, if not significantly worse, in the French ranks, Nicolas Anelka will take no further part in France's World Cup quest, which is, if one is being realistic, two thirds over, as the French have one foot in the coffin with one game remaining.
The Mexicans and Uruguayans would be very happy with a bore draw to complete the Group A fixtures, which would suffice to send both teams through to the last 16, even if Le French win dix zero. There are certainly significantly more than zero dix in the French squad – they are lead from the front by le manager whom resigned from the position before the tournament even commenced; Anelka has now done one and the rest of the players are refusing to train. Tres bien, La France.
England
So the French are in tatters and the English are not far behind as the massive respect for Fabio appears to have disintegrated. That or it is hidden behind the huge egos in the team. Like the French, the players have become far too big for their size tens and require pegging down. What's the word for ten in French again? It's about time Rooney et al grow a pair to go either side and start acting like men. Slovenia await the boys on Wednesday so here's to the second half! Incidentally, England are out to 10/1 from 8s at the beginning of the tournament...tempted? My heart says get on, my head says, are you having a laugh? There's more value at Harrods.
Brazil
There are some teams that are happy. Take Brazil, for instance, who have comfortably seen off the minnows of North Korea and the elephants of the Ivory Coast. It's a similar story for Argentina who have eased past South Korea and Nigeria. Germany thought they were cruising having brushed aside the Socceroos from Oz; alas, mighty Serbia were a different proposition and Germany lost their first group stage match at the World Cup finals since 1986. As I write this, Spain are on their way to securing victory over Honduras, however Fernando Torres doesn't seem to be able to hit a cow's rear with a giant banjo so scoring may be an issue in the later stages.
Half Time Tips!
Argentina only managed to scrape themselves into the World Cup finals by the skin of their teeth but, as we approach the half way stage, they are looking stronger and stronger as the tournament progresses.
The same could be said of the Dutch, who are sailing through Group E with aplomb; having said that, the opponents have not been up to much. As the vuvuzelas pipe up, the football is getting hotter and so is Capello's head. Get on the original hot head, Diego Maradona to lead his South Americans to victory (5/1 typically). Gonzalo Higuain is now the 11/4 favourite to win the Golden boot and already has three in the bag. Get on! 20/1 double anyone?
