Wroclaw Day Trips

Poland City Guides: Around Wroclaw

Trips From Wroclaw

If you want to get away from Wroclaw for the day then here are a few suggestions of places you can easily get to by car or train.

Swidnica is an old town 50km south west of Wroclaw. From the train station it's a couple of minutes' walk to the lively main square which is predominantly Baroque in architectural style. In the centre of Swidnica are two fine fountains to look at and the town hall. At the back of Swidnica town hall is the Museum of Shopkeeping with its recreations of traditional shop interiors. Open Tuesday to Friday from 10am-3pm and on the weekend from 11am-5pm admission is 3zl. The Church of Stanislaw and Wenceslas is also worth a visit with its majestic belfry standing at 103 metres tall - the 3rd highest in Poland.

The town's main attraction though is the Church of Peace, ten minutes' walk from the main square. Considered by some as the greatest timber-framed church ever built, it was constructed by Protestants in the 1650s following the end of the Thirty Years War. It is made solely of wood and hay after the Emperor at the time banned them from using stone or brick, or having a church tower. Inside it is covered top to bottom in beautiful, old, folk-art-style paintings and baroque sculptures. It was one of three Churches of Peace built (the other surviving one is in Jawor) and is now a UNESCO Heritage site. The Church is open to the public Monday-Saturday between 9am-1pm and 3pm-5pm on Sunday from 3-5pm.

You can easily get to Swidnica by hire car in an hour and the fastest train from Wroclaw (Polish State railways) will take you around an hour and ten minutes, with one change at Jaworzyna Slaska. A ticket costs around 12,60 zl.

If you want to visit the other Church of Peace in Jawor, it is also open all week from 10am-5pm from Monday to Saturday and noon-5pm on Sunday. Very similar to the one at Swidnica is has a multi-coloured interior and many decorative sculptures. The town's central square is now fairly modern after it was severely damaged in World War II and had to be re-built. St Martin's Church is a fine gothic building and the town hall, built in 1373 is one of the nicest buildings in Jawor.

Again Jawor is easily accessible from Wroclaw by either car (60km away which will take you just over an hour) or on the train. The fastest journey takes around an hour and a half and costs 15,60 zl.

Boleslawiec is a medieval town on the edge of a forest 100km away from Wroclaw. It was founded in 1190 by Boleslaw the Tall after the discovery of gold in the area. Known for its blue-glazed ceramics, the dainty pottery made here can be seen all over Poland.

Despite several large fires that burnt down parts of the town the newly renovated centre has a fine collection of medieval buildings. The main square is a short walk away from the train station with the Church of Holy Assumption and its lavish Baroque interior nearby.

Just up the hill is a pleasant park where in the mid-sixteenth century water from a spring was diverted along an aqueduct to bring fresh water into houses and transport sewage out into the city moats - only the second such system in medieval Europe. In Boleslawiec you will find the Museum of Ceramics with a varied collection of pottery from the town itself and beyond. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-4pm admission will cost you 3zl. There are also a number of ceramic workshops dotted around the town too with gift shops.

There is a direct train from Wroclaw to Boleslawiec which takes around an hour and forty minutes and costs 19,70 zl. If you prefer to drive, it would take you around two hours.

One of the best preserved castles in the Silesia area of Poland and the largest hilltop fortress in the country is found at Ksiaz. The castle, whose origins date back to the 13th century, is open every day from 10am-5pm and is well worth a visit for the setting alone. Surrounded on three sides by the Pelcznica River it has magnificent ornamental gardens and splendid terraces which attract numerous visitors every year. Inside the most striking function rooms like the Maximilian Hall can be visited individually but you have to be in a group of at least six people to take a tour of the castle's main towers and the World War II air raid tunnels. If there aren't enough people in your party then hang around at the ticket office and you can team up with other visitors.

Despite its rural location Ksiaz Castle is easy to get to by public transport. Take the train from Wroclaw to Walbrzych-Miasto station which will take around an hour and thirty minutes and cost 14,60, and then jump on the number 8 or 12 bus. Alternatively you can drive the 70km from Wroclaw.
