© Lars GöhlerThe Elster-Saale Canal (or Saale-Leipzig Canal) is an unfinished 11-kilometer, water-filled,special federal waterway in Germany initiated in 1933 to link Leipzig to the Saale River and the national waterway network. Aborted in 1943, it is now a leisure, tourism, and ecological area used for boating, canoeing, hiking, and biking. The waterway was originally designed to connect the White Elster river in Leipzig to the Saale River near Leuna, enabling industrial transportation to Hamburg.
