For almost thirty years the Berlin Wall divided the city of Berlin in two. Overnight its construction separated friends from friends, family from relatives, and one half of a great city from the other.
The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, marked a historic moment of unity and liberation for Germany and the world. Erected in 1961 to separate East and West Berlin, the wall became a potent symbol of the Cold War division between communist and capitalist ideologies.
As the winds of change swept across Eastern Europe, protests demanding freedom and democracy intensified in East Germany. With the relaxation of travel restrictions and mounting pressure from the people, the East German government reluctantly announced that citizens could cross the border freely. Throngs of jubilant East and West Berliners converged at the wall, tearing it down piece by piece, symbolizing the end of division and the beginning of a new era of unity and hope for Germany and Europe.
