© John DuerdenSeals in Cape Town are a familiar and lively presence along the city's coastline, most notably the Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) found at Hout Bay's Duiker Island and around the V&A Waterfront and False Bay. These social marine mammals live in large colonies and are known for their agility in the water and noisy, playful behavior on land. They feed mainly on fish and squid and play an important role in the coastal ecosystem, although they sometimes come into conflict with fisheries. Seals are also a major draw for tourists, featuring in boat trips, snorkeling excursions, and the wider marine life experience that makes Cape Town famous.
