© Peter HoareCape aloe (Aloe ferox) is a striking, tall succulent native to South Africa, especially the Eastern and Western Cape regions, where it thrives on rocky hillsides and open grasslands. It is easily recognized by its single thick stem, large spiny blue-green leaves, and bright red to orange flower spikes that bloom in winter and attract birds and insects. Traditionally, Aloe ferox has been valued for its medicinal and cosmetic uses, particularly the bitter sap used in laxatives and the gel used in skin-care products. Today, it is also popular as an ornamental plant and is harvested under controlled conditions to ensure sustainability while supporting local livelihoods.
