Kabul Match, Afghanistan 24th July 2001

World Cup

In Kabul's stadium, pock-marked with bullet holes, an estimated 50,000 fans saw a match between two local teams. In defiance of a Taliban decree which allows spectators to chant only 'Allah-O-Akbar' (which means 'God is great!'), fans clapped, shouted and whistled. According to Afghan football federation supremo Ahmad Jaan Zadran, it was the largest sporting event held in the country since the Taliban took control. It is said there were no female fans in attendance.

Soccerphile has so far been unable to ascertain the names of the two teams or the final score.
