It appears the 2002 World Cup will be a no-smoking affair. The opening match falls on 31st May which is ‘World No-Smoking Day' and the World Health Organization (WHO) has been recommending FIFA to ban smoking in World Cup stadiums. This may not go down too well with nervous coaches or generally in Korea and Japan where lighting-up is permitted in specially designated smoking areas. FIFA and the two host nations will discuss whether to permit this at a later date.
On the other hand, alcohol will be on sale within the grounds as FIFA has decided to allow the sale of beer which “has lower levels of alcohol”. Security officials had been worried about the threat to public order posed by drunken fans in and around stadia.
