Police AcademyUnder the headline "Japan too is watching carefully: Hooligans versus Police" the Asahi newspaper on 9 June reported the dispatch of an observer group of police officers to monitor the security situation at this summer's Euro 2000 tournament held jointly in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Although football-related violence is not totally unknown in Japan the authorities are hoping to pick up some vital hints in crowd control and policing techniques ahead of the 2002 World Cup to be held jointly in Japan and Korea. As Euro 2000 is also a jointly-hosted event the Japanese delegation was seeking insight in particular on how the Belgian and Dutch police forces co-operate and share information and intelligence. Hooligans beware, however, as the Tokyo riot police are all trained in martial arts and their Korean counterparts are not unfamiliar with the art of baton wielding.
