It is now time to show the Taliban régime in Afghanistan the red card. This misogynistic zealotry posing as religious wholesomeness is called "mediaeval" by some commentators, though there were societies in that period of history far more benign than the destructive and belligerent rulers of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
As lovers of football it is particularly disgusting to see TV documentaries of a woman being shot through the head on the edge of the penalty area in Kabul's Stadium; a man has his throat cut somewhere in midfield; and two men have been hanged using the crossbar as a gallows. It is difficult to imagine anything more grotesque happening on the ‘field of play' of the beautiful game.
