Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna, AustriaThe Schönbrunn Palace (Schloss Schönbrunn) in Vienna is the city's major tourist attraction. The Schonbrunn Palace is associated with the reign of Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780) when the glories of the palace were at their zenith. The large gardens at Schonbrunn include a maze, various follies, a Tiergarten (menagerie) and orangerie. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the palace was the historic summer home of Habsburg rulers, and home to the world's oldest zoo. The Millions Room is one of the most expensive Rococo interiors in Europe, decorated with rare rosewood and Indo-Persian miniatures.
The huge Baroque masterpiece served as the main summer residence of the powerful Habsburg monarchs and home for famous rulers such as Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Joseph. The vast Baroque palace has 1,441 rooms, featuring rich gold decorations and crystal chandeliers. Famous visitors include a young six-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who played music here in the palace's Hall of Mirrors for the empress.
The 1.2-square-kilometer park features grand alleys, the Neptune Fountain, Roman ruins, and the hilltop Gloriette structure offering panoramic views.
