Staatsoper, ViennaThe Staatsoper (State Opera) in Vienna, Austria is the country's premier venue for opera and dates to the mid-19th century with work completed on the largely stone building in 1869.
The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) is special because it is one of the top opera houses in the world, featuring a massive daily changing repertoire, and serves as a powerful symbol of Austrian history and culture.
It opened in May 1869 with Mozart's Don Giovanni and was the first major building on Vienna's famous Ring Road (Ringstraße). Destroyed by bombing in 1945 during World War II it reopened in 1955 as a proud symbol of national rebirth.
