Emperor Charles VI promised to build the church in 1713 if God saved Vienna from a deadly plague epidemic.
It honors Saint Charles Borromeo, who was known for helping sick people during plague outbreaks.The architect was Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and the building was finished by his son in 1737.
Features include the Twin Columns, two giant 47-meter spiral columns stand outside, inspired by Trajan's Column in Rome. They show scenes from the life of Saint Charles. The building mixes a Greek temple portico, Roman columns, and baroque towers. The inside dome has a huge 1,250-square-meter painted ceiling by Johannes Michael Rottmayr.
